Adult arson crime: exploring prisoners experiences and perceptions of the crime of arson
Summary:
The great dimension and impact that the commission of arson offences has on society as a whole highlights the need to investigate all the circumstances at the time of the arson. However, particular important parameters such as predisposing and triggering factors seem to play a catalytic role in the occurrence of an arson act. This study presents the theoretical background for the justification of arson offences and the formulations of important researchers who have studied arson offenders. It is also presenting the legal framework that defines the offence of Arson as a common dangerous crime. Then, within the framework of qualitative research, the experiences and perceptions of adult inmates of the Korydallos Detention Centre on the offence of Arson who participated in semi-structured interviews are explored and the findings of this study are presented with inductive reasoning using the method of thematic analysis. Participants were asked about experiences of their childhood and adult life as well as thoughts and feelings before, during and after the commission of the offences for which they have been charged. Finally, they expressed their perceptions of the concepts of risk and rules.
