Original Title:
Ισοτοπική μελέτη οστών νάνου ιπποπόταμου από την Αγία Νάπα Κύπρου με έμφαση στο παλαιοκλίμα και τη σύγκρισή του με το κλίμα σήμερα.
Translated title:
Isotopic study of pygmy hippopotamus bones from Ayia Napa Cyprus with emphasis on paleoclimate and its comparison with the climate today.
Summary:
As part of this work, oxygen and carbon isotopic analyzes were performed on apatite bones and teeth from the dwarf hippo species Phanourios minor that lived in Cyprus between 11,000 and 13,500 years ago (Theodorou et al., 2007), with the aim of reconstructing the paleoclimate and the paleo diet. A total of 20 specimens were used (12 bones and 8 teeth), which were collected from the fossil site of Ayia Napa. The resulting values were compared with data from similar isotopic studies from Cyprus and the wider region of the south-eastern Mediterranean, in order to reconstruct the paleo-environmental conditions of Ayia Napa at the time when pygmy hippos lived in the area as well as their eating habits. Finally, a comparison was made of the Pleistocene climate conditions with today's climate conditions.
