Summary:
In this thesis, two different kinds of aerogels have been prepared: (i) polyurea-crosslinked ferric alginate (X-Fe-alg) aerogels, and (ii) magnetic carbon (X-Fe-C) aerogels.
X-Fe-alg aerogels were prepared from the reaction of preformed Fe-alginate gels with three triisocyanates (the aliphatic triisocyanates Desmodur Z 4470 BA (IPDI) and Desmodur N3300 (N3300) and the aromatic triisocyanate Desmodur RE (RE)). They are macroporous (mostly) and mesoporous materials. X-Fe-alg-RE also contains a small portion of micropores. X-Fe-alg aerogels have low bulk densities (0.033-0.088 g/cm–3), high porosity (94-98% v/v) and high BET surface areas (100-313 m2/g–1).
X-Fe-C aerogels were prepared from pyrolysis of X-Fe-alg-RE aerogels under inert atmosphere (Ar), at five temperatures, i.e., 400, 600, 800, 1000 and 1200 oC. They are microporous materials (83-87% of the total surface area is assigned to micropores) and they can adsorb CO2. The optimum materials, in terms of properties and CO2 sorption, are the aerogels prepared from pyrolysis at 1000 oC; their specific and micropore surface areas are equal to 314 m2/g–1 and 274 m2/g–1, respectively, and the CO2 sorption was equal to 3.3 mmol/g–1. All X-Fe-C aerogels are magnetic, indicating the presence of metallic iron and/or magnetic iron oxides (magnetite, maghemite).
