Power and truth according to Michel Foucault
Summary:
The aim of the present work is to examine the effect of truth in the formation of power relations, according to Michel Foucault’s “power-knowledge” theory. My study is mostly based on the works of Michel Foucault's genealogical period (Surveillance and Punishment, first volume of the History of Sexuality). According to Foucault, power is rather positive and not repressive, in the sense that it produces knowledge, while at the same time, it is the result of the latter. An essential condition for the power to be functional is the construction of its truth; that truth is governed by historical contingency. Each society has its own "regimes of truth". In the last part of the present work, one may find an investigation on Foucault’s considerations concerning the correlation among the three concepts knowledge-truth-power, in the preeminent ancient tragedy of truth, Sophocles' Oedipus the Tyrant.
