Behavioral problems in kindergarten students, teacher-student relationship and teacher's emotional intelligence
Summary:
Over the last few decades there has been an increase in behavioral problems for children of preschool age. There have been few research studies in Greece that study the link between preschool children’s behavioral problems and the formation of a bond between the preschool teacher and their students. There have been even fewer studies that study the emotional intelligence of the preschool teacher as a factor that is capable to improve the relationship with their students. This gap is what the present study aims to cover.
What is studied in this research is the connection between behavioral problems of students in kindergarten as well as their interpersonal relationship to their teacher. Furthermore, the relationship of the aforementioned variants and the emotional intelligence of the preschool teacher is also examined. The participants of the research were 92 preschool teachers, presently working in both public and private schools throughout Greece who have filled in three separate questionnaires, which tested the teachers’emotional intelligence, the students’ behaviour and the quality of student-teacher interpersonal relationship.
Overall, 184 students have been studied, 92 of them having behavioral problems at school according to their teachers and 92 without apparent behavioral problems.
The results of this research indicate that the students’ behavioral problems relate to lower quality of their relationship with their teacher. It was also found that teachers’ higher emotional intelligence relates to more positive relationship with their students. Lastly, there has not been found a statistically important correspondence between the teachers’ emotional intelligence and the frequency or intensity of the student’s behavioral problems.
These findings provide impetus for more research on the teacher-student relationship and student behavior, as well as the emotional intelligence of preschool teachers. According to the results, it is proposed to create programs for the development of the emotional intelligence of University students in Teaching Schools, as well as to train kindergarten teachers in emotional development programs.
