Psychological characteristics and eating disorders in dance; The role of self-compassion
Summary:
This study investigated the association between body image, perfectionism and self-compassion with the prevalance of feeding and eating disorders symptoms (FED) in female classical, contemporary, social and/or dancesport Latin dancers. In addition, it was examined whether self-compassion interacts with body image and perfectionism and modifies their relationship with FED symptoms. Five hundred and seventy-six adult, professional, pre-professional, competitive and amateur dancers completed: a) the Eating Attitudes Test EAT-26, b) the Body Image Questionnaire for Classical and Contemporary Dance Dancers, c) the Sport Perfectionism Questionnaire and d) the Self-Compassion Scale. The Social Desirability Scale was also administered, according to which 468 dancers remained for further analyses. One hundred and fifty-six dancers scored ≥20 on the EAT-26. Significant correlations were found among the prevalence of FED, body image, perfectionism and self-compassion (r=-.468 to .551, p<.05). The factors satisfaction with body structure, body weight control, striving for perfection and the total score of Self-Compassion Scale explained 39.3% of the variance of EAT-26 scores (Adjusted R2=.393, F=61.545, p<.001). The same factors as well as the interactions between self-compassion and satisfaction with body structure, body weight control and perfectionistic concerns explained 41.7% of the variance of EAT-26 values (Adjusted R2=.417, F=42.813, p<.001). Self-compassion interacted with satisfaction with body structure, body weight control and perfectionistic concerns and affected the direction of their relationship with the prevalance of FED. In dance environment, body image dissatisfaction and some parameters of perfecionism are important risk factors for the prevalence of FED symptoms, while a compassionate attitude towards oneself can act protectively, changing the relationship of the above variables with the FED symptoms. This finding, in addition to the high percentage of dancers with a tendency to develop FED (33.33%) underlines the need to seek professional psychological counseling and to reshape the demands of the dance environment.
