Summary:
This research, titled “Music, Borderline personality disorder – destructive behaviours and mental health in musicians and non musicians with the use of the MuPsych”, examines the effectiveness of music listening as a mechanism of avoiding destructive behaviours in musicians and non musicians. On a daily basis, more and more people give in to destructive behaviours of any kind and any intensity to combat internal issues. From the seemingly innocent habit of smoking (which in the long run causes a lot of health problems) and the overspending of monthly salary to things that offer a short term relief and enjoyment, to more severe destructive behaviours like self-mutilation by blunt force or inducing vomiting after a bulimic episode. Certainly, there are numerous research studies that prove the therapeutic ability of music not only for the body but also for the mind. Music therapy has become a way for people with difficulty expressing their emotions with words, to express themselves through music. After all, music is known as a way of expressing emotions that we cannot express with words and can even arouse feelings that we didn’t know existed. However, there are not many studies on how selective music listening helps people avoid a destructive behaviour when needed. Further below, we will see that music is presented in dialectical behaviour therapy, as a means of overcoming a difficult emotional episode which most of the patients with borderline personality disorder choose to cope with by self mutilation. How can this coping mechanism, though, be used as a skill for the general population and what would be the difference in the use of music as such by musicians and non musicians?
