The purposes and functions of myths in Plato’s Republic
Summary:
The philosopher Plato, in his grandiose work Republic, resorts to the use of many myths. Some of them are already well known in antiquity, such as the myth of the magic ring of Gyges, whereas some others seem to be fabricated by the philosopher himself, such as the famous allegory of the cave. What was the reason, however, that prompted Plato to embellish the Republic with these myths? Did he use them with the sole objective of giving his text a literary flair or was there additional motives for this, unexpected for philosophical essays, choice? In this thesis we would try to detect and highlight the purposes and functions that accomplish these myths, in one of the most famous Plato’s dialogues.
