Pandemic and parenting: challenges and responses during the pandemic
Summary:
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of the pandemic on the parental role. From the research carried out in the paper, particularly important conclusions emerge regarding the challenges of the parental role and also the responses during the pandemic. The research shows that both parents and children responded to the demands of teleworking and telelearning, respectively, imposed by the pandemic. Regarding physical activity it was argued that there was a significant difference between children's physical activity during the pandemic compared to before the pandemic. Regarding children's emotions, the majority of parents claimed that their children became very stressed. This was seen in the daily coexistence, while regarding the feelings of the parents themselves, the parents, regardless of gender, who were active in the health field seemed to deal with the situation with greater composure than the rest of the parents. The parents, in the majority of them, however, claimed that they were afraid at the beginning, however, it seems that they faced it with patience and trust in the scientists and also with related discussions with their relatives. Regarding the living conditions at home, the existence of problems was reported. Regarding multiple roles, women seem to have responded more effectively than men, while regarding whether they experienced stress with their parental role during the pandemic, all parents without exception answered positively. Regarding the strengths of the parental role, parents agreed that they became closer to their children, enjoyed more hours with them. Finally, regarding the weak points of the parental role, the main challenge was managing the whole situation so as to affect the children as little as possible, while in terms of what they would change, the majority of parents answered that they would try to change the time they have with the children
