Orality and autobiographical elements in Auguste Corteau’s prose
Summary:
The aim of the current study is to highlight the significance of the interaction between two axes of reference when analyzing Auguste Corteau's prose; its autobiographical component and the oral form of its speech. The analysis is focused on the works listed below: The book of Katerina, Μικρό χρονικό τρέλας (= A Brief Chronicle of Madness), O άνθρωπος που έτρωγε πολλά (= The man who was eating a lot), Η καλύτερη χειρότερη μέρα της ζωής μου (= The best worst day of my life). There are two primary research goals. The first one is to draw attention to the autobiographical dimension as a key component of the texts under consideration. The second one is focused on exploring the many ways in which the autobiographical character is incorporated into their respective formal and thematic structures. On a secondary level, the thesis examines the significance of orality in the aforementioned process and tries to illuminate the author's decision to use orality to process his own trauma. In the end, this choice will be viewed as Corteau's effort to abolish the stigma attached to talking about and treating mental illnesses, as well as a way of coping with personal trauma. This goal is completely congruent with his authorial persona's larger presence, which regularly challenges the stigmatization of mental illness that pervades public discourse.
