Ioannis Permeniatis and other Greek painters in Venice in the first half of the sixteenth century
Summary:
The thesis attempts to make a contribution to the study of the work of Ioannis Permeniatis, a member of the group of the Greek painters who lived in Venice in the first half of the 16th century, a period of great artistic flourishing in the Italian metropolis. It presents the archival and artistic evidence known to date concerning fifteen Greek painters, most of whom were members of the Greek Confraternity, which was founded in Venice in 1498. The main part of the thesis deals with the work of Ioannis Permeniatis, who is also attested as a member of the Greek Confraternity in 1523. His works, three signed and thirty two attributed paintings, are examined in detail, grouped into iconographic categories. The aim of this examination is to highlight the various influences exerted on the painter, on the one hand from the Byzantine tradition and on the other hand from a wide spectrum of Western European painting, as well as the way in which he synthesized these influences, creating a special artistic language. In other words, it attempts to present aspects of the artistic personality of a Greek painter, who was able to respond to the questions posed by the art and religiosity of his time in the environment of Venice, which was rich in artistic stimuli but also highly demanding on the professional level, offering a work at the crossroads of post-Byzantine and Western painting.
