Summary:
The present thesis, written in the context of the postgraduate programme of Greco-Roman and Greco-Italian studies, aims to study the most important works of the Italian semiologist, essayist, philosopher and novelist, Umberto Eco.
The Name of the Rose, The Cemetery of Prague, The History of Beauty and The History of Ugliness are the works selected for both qualitative and computational analysis. In his novels, Eco tells stories that actually happened or presents legends featuring historical or fictional characters. He includes in his works intense philosophical discussions about the existence of death, God or the nature of the universe, interspersing countless quotations and links to works of various genres.
Resorting to the qualitative, but mainly to the computational analysis of keywords and with the help of the "distance reading" method combined with the use of computer programs, we created diagrams for the best approach of Eco’s work.
