Summary:
The necessity of understanding and studying the Mediterranean cyclones, in the light
of Climate Change, to increase the levels of resilience of the wider Greek area, led to
this thesis, which focuses on the effects caused by the passage of such a catastrophic
phenomenon.
In this Master Thesis there is an attempt to present the Mediterranean cyclone with
tropical characteristics “Ianos”, which hit our country in September 2020. The stages
of creation and the evolution of the phenomenon are studied up to the point where the
wider area of Karditsa, in the Region of Thessaly was affected.
In addition, the meteorological phenomenon which took place over the Thessaly plain
and resulted in extremely significant rainfall levels, which subsequently led to
catastrophic floods, mudflows and landslides in the wider Region of Karditsa. The
effects are recorded through satellite images and from images taken on the field, and
examined the reaction of Greek authorities.
