Study of selected plant extracts of the Greek flora in terms of their chemical content and biological properties. Phytochemical study of the aerial parts of the species Centaurea salonitana.
Summary:
Initially, 66 extracts from 19 different taxa belonging to the families Urticaceae, Capparaceae, Fabaceae, Rubiaceae, Geraniaceae, Lamiaceae, Plantaginaceae, Boraginaceae, Rosaceae and Asteraceae were collected using the ultrasound-assisted impregnation technique, followed by the evaluation of their phytochemical Profile. In addition, the produced extracts were evaluated for their ability to inhibit free radicals (DPPH), as well as tyrosinase and collagenase enzymes. Subsequently, the methanolic extract of Centaurea salonitana species (family Asteraceae) was selected for further phytochemical study, as it presented a significant ability to inhibit tyrosinase. Using spectroscopic techniques (1D and 2D NMR) 10 secondary metabolites were identified and more specifically, 7 flavonoids, 1 lignan, 1 lactone and 1 phenylpropanoid.
