Research on the perception of mental illness in greek police
Summary:
Stigma constitutes a multidimensional phenomenon that evolves stereotypes and prejudice. Interaction between the mentally ill and the police force is rather frequent; the relevant literature highlights the need for police intervention in order patients to receive the necessary care, while their interaction is a frequent phenomenon for police officers. The aim of this paper was to describe the theoretical background around the concepts of stereotypes and prejudice, as well as the stigma in a general context, and in relation to the stigma expressed by the police towards mentally ill individuals. Police officers are often the first to respond to incidents involving the mentally ill, and play an important role in ensuring the safety and well-being of these individuals. However, research has shown that police officers may express prejudice against people with mental disorders, which can affect the fashion they interact with them. The attitude of the police towards the mentally ill is influenced by a variety of factors such as their work experience and educational level, as well as patients’ characteristics such as the severity of their illness. Literature suggests that interventions regarding the familiarization of police officers on issues regarding mental health and illness appear to be effective. Given the small relevant research, more studies will confirm the existing findings, and pave the way for the integration of such intervening programs into the standard police training. Addressing mental health stigma within the law enforcement is vital in order to ensure that people with mental health issues are treated with respect. By addressing the stigma of mental health in law enforcement, we can work towards the creation of a safer and more inclusive society for all.
