Review of the impact of drug interaction on the therapeutic management of elderly patients
Summary:
Elderly patients constitute a vulnerable group of the population, which requires further attention to therapeutic management. The reasons lie in the fact that older people undergo multiple changes in their body as a result of ageing, while at the same time they suffer from multiple diseases. Treating the conditions involves taking multiple medications resulting in polypharmacy. The interaction of different medications results in the development of adverse drug reactions, which makes treatment management of elderly patients even more difficult.
The aim of this review is to summarize the existing literature on the effects of drug interactions on elderly patients. The thesis is structured into two main sections. In the first part, the categories of drug interactions are analyzed and the adverse drug reactions are defined. This is followed by a definition of the elderly, with a particular emphasis on the physiological and pathological changes that accompany the aging process, and finally, reference is made to polypharmacy and the main tools for detecting inappropriate prescribing in the elderly. In the second part, the most serious and frequent adverse drug reactions are recorded, as they resulted from the search of studies in the PubMed database using the MeSH terms: “drug interactions” and “aged”. Drug-drug interactions refer to episodes of QT prolongation, TdP, bleeding, electrolyte disturbances, myopathy, rhabdomyolysis and falls, that require immediate treatment.
