Nurse provided cardiac rehabilitation after open heart surgery
Summary:
Introduction: Cardiac rehabilitation is lately considered as a revolutionary technique that
improves patients’ health.
Aim: The aim of the study is to present a holistic approach of the cardiac rehabilitation
programme.
Methodology: Literature published between January 2023 and February 2023 was
researched using Pubmed and Scopus databases. Studies that passed the last ten years were excluded. The keywords “heart surgery”, “cardiac surgical procedures”, “cardiac surgery”, “by-pass graft”, “valve surgery”, “rehabilitation”, “exercise therapy” researched as part of title or abstract.
Results: Cardiac rehabilitation offers a decrease in mortality rates, readmission rates and
anxiety and depression levels. It is observed endurance increasement and maximum
oxygen consumption augmentation through the rehabilitation exercise. It is necessary to be postoperatively provided nutrition and nurse support. Rehabilitation centers’ access and lack of family and psychological support are the most common participation barriers.
Major adverse effects are possible to be predicted in future.
Conclusions: Cardiac rehabilitation offers many patient benefits, among them the
improvement of physical and psychological function, the diet restriction, and the prediction of major adverse effects. Nurse attendance is without a doubt quite important, while it is feasible to eliminate all the barriers that contribute to patients’ attendance.
