Lexical choices and narrative structure of testimonials by women who have experienced sexual harassment
Summary:
The aim of the present study is to identify the linguistic choices in a corpus of texts on a micro- and macro-level. In particular, 263 texts (47.494 tokens in total) have been analyzed. They are genuine testimonials by women who have experienced sexual harassment or misconduct. These testimonials came up in relation to the MeToo social movement in Greece and were posted on a related website. The first part of data analysis deals with lexical and lexicogrammatical choices of the writers, by using methods of corpus linguistics, and examines the way linguistic choices cooperate to organize the meaning of the text. The most common findings about these choices are negative (verbal) phrases. Moreover, specific conceptual axes regarding awareness, consciousness and psychological and physical reaction of the writer are discussed as significant. In the second part of the analysis, texts are examined from a structural point of view, by using Labov’s analytical model of narrative structure. According to the findings, most texts broadly follow this model, although texts with less or not at all narrative structure were also found. Finally, it was found that specific lexicogrammatical choices are related to specific structures and at the same time these elements cooperate to achieve text completeness.
