Aspects of Irony in Poetics by K. G. Karyotakis
Summary:
In this thesis, an attempt is made to highlight the aspects of irony in the works of K. G. Karyotakis and more specifically in certain poems of “Poetics” ‒ as they are often characterized ‒ from “Nipenthi” and “Elegies and Satires”. A genuine representative of the interwar era, Kariotakis used irony as a weapon to satirize and castigate the sociopolitical and ideological situation of his time, to question the mechanisms of power and to decry his peers. Karyotakis will seek vindication and catharsis in poetry, soon to realize the dissidence between art and society and the degraded role of poets. Irony, of which he has been a skilled craftsman in terms of rhetoric and plot, caustic and emotionally charged due to the disappointments he experienced, frequently expressed as sarcasm or in the form of emotional lability, will permeate his poetry. The poet will deploy the techniques of irony to denounce the betrayal of the values of poetry as well as to express his gloomy disposition and his personal predicament. The unconventionality of his poetry regarding the form and the theme, in conjunction with its social dimension, gave Karyotakis a prominent place in the history of Modern Greek Literature.
