Use of medicinal cannabis in the treatment of symptoms of cancer patients
Summary:
Cannabinoids, the active components of cannabis sativa (Cannabis sativa), mimic the effects of endogenous cannabinoids (endocannabinoids) by activating specific cannabinoid receptors, particularly the CB1 receptor found mainly in the central nervous system and the CB2 receptor found mainly in cells that involved with immune function. Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol), the main bioactive cannabinoid in the plant, has been made available as a prescription drug approved for the treatment of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting as well as anorexia. Cannabinoids may be beneficial in the treatment of cancer pain since there may be a synergistic mechanism with opioid analgesics. Also, cannabinoids have been shown to be beneficial in the treatment of peripheral neuropathy from chemotherapy. Cannabinoids have a favorable drug safety profile, but their medical use is mainly limited by their psychoactive effects and limited bioavailability. The purpose of the study was to investigate the use of medicinal cannabis in the treatment of symptoms of cancer patients. A literature was conducted in the Google Scholar and Pubmed databases. The search was carried out without a chronological limitation and using the terms (individually and in combination): “cannabis”, “medicinal cannabis”, “cancer”, “cancer patients”, “symptoms, “management”
