Spatial and temporal variability of air pollution and health effects in the wider area of Volos. Methodological and Empirical Approach
Summary:
Writing my PhD thesis, the initial objective was a detailed air quality study of the urban area of Volos, a medium-sized Mediterranean city, which has a complex topography but also an air pollution recording network consisting of one measurement station . In recent years, a network has been developed to measure air pollution, through research programs, so that there is a better and more reliable recording of atmospheric pollutants. The study of public health impacts was another key objective of this thesis. For this purpose, suspended particles with an aerodynamic diameter of less than 10μm (PM10) have been chosen as the reference pollutant. A lot of scientific studies show that suspended particles are the main atmospheric pollutant in an urban environment, not only for Greece but also for almost all urban areas, not only in developed but also in developing countries. For the time period 2001-2018, an analysis was made of the PM10 average daily concentration values, the average annual values, the maximum and minimum values and their correlation with meteorological data with the appropriate methodology and analysis.
Also, an attempt was made to predict the concentration levels of PM10 in the urban area of Volos using Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) from 2001 to 2009. Artificial Neural Networks were created and trained, so that we can say that this thesis enables a timely and quite valid forecast of the air quality in the urban area of Volos, regarding the PM10 concentration levels.
In addition, an attempt was made to create the Air Quality Index, (AQI). This index concerns the recording on a daily basis of the quality of the atmosphere and aims to inform citizens, researchers and authorities about the quality of the atmosphere.
Afterwards, the AirQ+ software was applied, which is a specialized software developed by the World Health Organization (WHO), and allows the researcher to estimate the possible public health effects of human exposure to a specific air pollutant, in specific urban area, during a specific time period, morbidity and mortality in the city of Volos due to suspended particles (PM10) were estimated.
Regarding the structure of this thesis, the first chapter refers to some introductory data on air pollution and suspended particles. Moreover, in chapter 1 a bibliographic review has been made referring to the problem of atmospheric pollution mainly in the urban area. Then, in chapter 2 the use of Artifficial Neural Networks and their applications in the last 20 years has been developed. In chapter 3 an analysis of air quality and meteorology has been made. The processing of the time series of suspended particles in the city of Volos from 2001 to 2018 using statistical methods of analysis (regression), study of warm (April – September) and cold (October – March) period of the year, etc. is also presented. The development of TNDs for air pollution forecasting in the city of Volos also studied in this chapter. In chapter 4, the air pollution indicators have been analyzed, specifically the AQI index for the city of Volos. In chapter 5 reference has been made to specific cases of studying air pollution in the Volos urban area. In chapter 6 an assessment of the potential health effects has been made using the AIRQ+ software. In chapter 7 there are the conclusions of the thesis and then follows the appendix with tables and diagrams from the statistical analysis carried out.
