"Applications of Ζhumanitarian technology: Mapathon as a tool for immediate crisis management''
Summary:
The following thesis was developed as part of the "Participatory Governance and
Digital Social and Humanitarian Innovation" course in the postgraduate program
"Digital Media Communication and Interaction Environments" of the Department of
Communication and Media Studies at the National and Kapodistrian University of
Athens. The goal of the thesis is to research and record the role of humanitarian
mapping and, by extension, Mapathons as a humanitarian technological tool.
Specifically, it aims to examine the use and application of Mapathons and their impact
on society within a humanitarian framework.
In order to achieve the goal of the research process, the paper begins with framing the
theoretical part for all the relevant points that are raised for discussion and addressed.
Thus, in the first part of the dissertation, the focus is mainly on the theoretical approach
of the terms and their content, "humanitarian (digital) mapping," "humanitarian
technology," and "Mapathon," as well as how this relates to the two above terms,
leading them to "participatory humanitarian mapping and technology." The purpose is
to inform, raise awareness, and above all, make clear to the readers the reason why
Mapathon is an appropriate tool for humanitarian action, as well as how and where it
can be applied.
The second part documents the methodology followed and provides a detailed account
of the quantitative and qualitative methods used in the study to achieve its research
objective.
Through observation and evaluation of the case study that was carried out, conclusions
are drawn about the usefulness of Mapathon in crisis situations and its humanitarian
contribution. The research questions raised in the paper regarding the utility of
Mapathon in humanitarian action are answered.
