The versification of Cavafy's poetry
Summary:
The objectives of this doctoral thesis are the study of the metrical organization of all the poems of C. P. Cavafy (of those recognized by the poet himself, i.e. the corpus of official Cavafian poetry, but also of other categories of poems, i.e. repudiated, unpublished or hidden and unfinished poems) and the examination of the evolution of his versification in the course of time. The research method followed includes the detailed description of the qualitative characteristics of the various forms and the metric-rhythmic means –based on their typological classification in broader and more specific categories– and the extraction of numerical results based on statistical measurements. The thesis is structured in three parts. In the first part, a historical review of the reception of the form of Cavafy’s poems is attempted from the appearance of the poet until today, reference is made to positions that Cavafy himself has formulated in his texts regarding issues of versification and, given the fact that in the majority of Cavafy’s poetic texts (and especially in the great majority of the poems that belong to the mature phase of Cavafy’s poetic production) the form of liberated verse is followed, the main stations of the course of European and Greek poetry from the use of strictly metered verse to the liberation of poetics are recorded. Then, the main features of the poetry of four poets who dominated during the period of development of liberated verse in Greece are presented, namely Kostis Palamas, Angelos Sikelianos, Kostas Varnalis and K. G. Karyotakis. Also, a metrical analysis is made of specific, composed in liberated verse, poems or excerpts from longer compositions of these poets. The second part presents the findings of the metrical analysis of Cavafy’s poems. In more detail, the examination focuses on the formal organization of poetic texts, the features of the verses, the rhyme, the vowel meetings and the enjambments. The third part of the thesis is a product of the research carried out in the manuscripts of the Cavafy archive, for the purpose of studying the first forms of the poems and investigating the potential differentiation of the metric construction of the poems from their initial design to the moment they were published.
