Summary:
This dissertation is a product of ethnomusicological research, which focuses on the three fundamental dimensions of the Greek traditional cultural scheme ‘music, dance, collective drinking’, while discussing the ways in which these elements interact, co-shape and transform the cultural performance of ‘glenti’, as it is witnessed in various times and spaces in Ikaria island and beyond.
Through fieldwork and theoretical analysis of research data collected from local, trans-local and diasporic performances of ‘glenti’, the dissertation explores their role in the cultural construction of community, as well as their influence as performative elements that lead to the rising of an expanded community of ‘glenti’ with ephemeral and diverse cultural characteristics, while drawing attention to matters of identity, gender, dialogical communication and participation.
Furthermore, the dissertation sheds light to the course and transformations of the Ikarian musical and dancing culture through time, while discussing in particular the ‘ikariotiko’, the popular folk dance of Ikaria, and its contemporary role as an autonomous commercialized cultural product, explored in live spaces, as well as in mediated environments such as the mass media and the internet.
In this context, the discourse between traditional and modern musical and dancing performances, provides detailed information concerning the Ikarian musical and dancing culture and the (re)position of Self culturally and symbolically in the contemporary globalized era.
