Ground and polished lithic artefacts (macroliths) during the Early Bronze Age in Attica (Greece). Issues of raw material provenance, procurement , transportation and use. The case of the settlement of Koropi, Attica.
Summary:
This thesis concerns the study of ground and polished stone tools (macroliths) from three Early Bronze Age sites in Attica (Koropi, Lambrika Koropi, Agios Kosmas Helliniko) and one island, Provatsa of Makronissos, near the eastern coast of Lavreotiki. The methodological approach of the archaeological material was carried out through the study of the operational sequence (chaine operatoire) of the artefacts, which includes all the stages of raw material procurement, production, use and final deposition of them. We examined both technological and typological characteristics of the lithic artefacts, in combination to their spatial distribution. The largest quantity and quality of the artefacts comes from the settlement at Koropi, an agricultural and pastoral community, one the large settlements flourished during he Early Bronze Age Period showing signs of early urbanization. The ground stone artefacts from Koropi shows a great variety in raw materials, where volcanic rocks are dominating, great fluency and excellent skills in processing the lithic material, diversity in the various tool types, as well as various utilitarian and functional possibilities of these artefacts during their use in a multitude of community tasks. On the contrary, the polished stone tools of the site, with a smaller numerical presence, demonstrated adherence to traditional morphological types with a tendency to preserve more the raw material and not the functionality of the tools themselves. The material from Lambrika and Provatsa confirmed the character and small habitional area of these two places, whose inhabitants are active in special occupations related to mining and metallurgical activities. Finally, we had the opportunity to approach with a different point of view the material available for study from Ag.Kosmas. This thesis, finally, highlighted the social implications of the technology, and the contribution of macroliths to our understanding of the different ways these communities act and leave their cultural imprint in their broad chronological and geographical horizon. The results of this thesis may contribute to redefine the study of these artefacts in a more holistic way.
