Impact of sea-state on sea dynamics in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea
Summary:
The interface of two very different in density mediums, sea and atmosphere, is never static but is in continuous movement as wind interacts with it to the formation of waves. Sea-surface waves have an impact on the sea dynamics mainly through Stokes drift, which can be interpreted as an extra velocity component in water’s molecules. Stokes drift affects all the oceanographic parameters in the sea surface namely the sea surface temperature, salinity and height, mixed layer depth, heat flux and kinetic energy of the surface currents. In the frame of this study a combination of the wave model WAVEWATCH III and the oceanographic model NEMO was done in the region of Mediterranean at 2018 in order to model the effect of Stokes drift as it arises from the coupling of the two models. The annual differences of the abovementioned parameters were studied before and after the coupling. The results show that the differences are relatively small and are due to horizontal swift of the surface currents as NEMO already has physical algorithms which parametrize well the Stokes drift effect in vertical mixing through Langmuir Circulation.
