Contribution of selected physiological parameters to a 12-hour ultramarathon
Summary:
The aim of the present work was the contribution of selected physiological parameters of road ultramarathon runners to the performance of a 12-hour race. The study data was collected on 10 runners who participated in a 12-hour race held inside a stadium. Before the competitive effort, the subjects underwent an ergometric evaluation to measure the cardiorespiratory endurance parameters: VO2max, vVO2max, and the running speed at the respiratory threshold. Anthropometric data of the runners were also taken: height, weight, %fat. The most important factors in performance in the 12-hour road ultramarathon appeared to be, in order: the percentage of body fat, the percentage of heart beats at a submaximal speed of 12 kilometers per hour, and the speed at the maximal intake of the runners.
