The evolution of the asymetric threat in context of Chemical, Biological and Radiological warfare from antiquety to modern times
Summary:
Victory as an outcome of an armed conflict by any means is the pursuit of those involved in the conquest of territories, minerals, the imposition of political, national, and ideological sovereignty. Therefore, the use of authorized and unauthorized weapons is at the disposal of belligerents regardless of strength and power. In this context, the purpose of this paper is the analysis of the term of asymmetric threat in the context of Chemical, Biological and Radiological Warfare. The above-mentioned goal will be attempted through historical retrospection starting from Antiquity throughout the Middle Ages, the First and Second World War until today. Furthermore, we will refer to the development of the framework that limits and governs these methods in the newly formed war perspective through International Conventions. Finally, conclusions and proposals will be drawn up, as well as a summary of the new doctrine will be presented.
The 1st Chapter will commence with a brief, summary introduction of the causes of war and the change of war from antiquity to the present based on theoretical and strategic analysts. We will also refer to the methodology of the paper as well as the sources of our approach. Finally, the analysis of the Key words as defined below will follow.
In the 2nd Chapter, we will refer to chemical warfare providing the definitions that have been given from time to time, its characteristics, the catastrophic effects it causes, the ways of proliferation, and its distinction based on methods. Subsequently, a historical description of ways of use of chemical weapons in Antiquity, in the Middle Ages, in the First and Second World War and finally in the 21st century will be made. Finally, there will be a reference to the International Conventions which have been concluded under the auspices of the UN and earlier.
In the 3rd Chapter, reference will be made to biological/microbiological warfare. The definition, general characteristics, levels, degree of damage to humans, animals or the environment will be given. The historical retrospection will begin here with references from Antiquity, the Middle Ages, where we find that it is the usual war tactic, the First and Second World War, and finally the modern era. Finally, we will also refer at this point to the International Conventions under the auspices of the UN.
In the 4th Chapter, reference will be made to the most modern form of warfare, radiological warfare. The definition, characteristics, ways of exposure to radiological materials and the effects due to contamination will also be given at this point. Then the historical route, which starts from 1940 to today, will be given briefly. Then we will refer to the countries that pioneered the experiments and finally to the International Conventions on the limitation of use and prohibition.
In the 5th Chapter, reference will be made to occasionally use of chemical and biological weapons during the Cold War period, when fear was common through the world, and to the new order of things of the “bioterrorism”.
In the 6th Chapter of the Conclusions, it will be attempted through the citation of the information we have collected throughout the times, if and to what extent the use of biological, chemical and radiological weapons which are used in the asymmetric threat with its catastrophic effects on humans and the environment, there is a possibility that they will stop being produced, reproduced, developed and used. Finally, reference will be made to International Conventions and their effectiveness as well as to the New Doctrine that governs asymmetric threats today.
