Generic, intertextual and performative approaches to the Alcestis Barcinonensis
Summary:
This thesis studies the work Alcestis Barcinonensis, an anonymous Latin poem of the 4th century A.D., which was discovered only recently, in 1979. In the first part I investigate the issue of its generic identity and I examine three different possibilities, firstly the possibility that it belongs to the literary genre of ethopoeia (sermocinatio), secondly to the literary genre of epyllion and lastly to that of pantomime’s libretto, where I also analyse the performative aspects of the poem. In the second part of this thesis, I investigate the influences that it has received from previous works, both literary and philosophical, in combination with ancient visual evidence. Initially, I compare the Latin poem with Euripides’ Alcestis, which is its main model and then I demonstrate the intertextual references with the elegies 4.7 and 4.11 of Propertius and the description of Dido’s death in the fourth book of the Aeneid. Finally, I discuss the influences that the anonymous poet has received from the philosophical system of stoicism and specifically from Seneca’s work as well as those from Plato’s Symposium and from the description of Socrates’ death that can be found in Phaedo.
