Original Title:
The role of the EU in the management of migration and asylum in Greece and Serbia
Translated title:
Ο ρόλος της ΕΕ στη διαχείριση της μετανάστευσης και του ασύλου στην Ελλάδα και τη Σερβία
Summary:
The European Union had and still has an important role in the management of
migration and asylum, especially in Greece as well as Serbia. Despite
significant differences (Serbia is not an EU member state and a recent
country of transit for migrants), both countries are part of the Balkan route that
continues to this day to function as a main transit corridor for northern Europe.
Both countries continue to experience significant influxes of refugees and
migrants, and are on the receiving end of financial assistance from the EU for
the management of migration.
This thesis aims to analyze how the EU has managed migration and asylum
in Greece post-2015, assessing policy effectiveness and impacts. Insights
from this analysis will inform speculations on how the EU might respond to
migration scenarios in Serbia, a key Western Balkan transit country towards
the Schengen area.
