Effectiveness of health educational programs in secondary education
Summary:
Introduction: In recent years there has been an increasing interest in health education programmes and how they could join the school program both in Greece and internationally.
Purpose: The investigation of the effectiveness of the Health Education programs which are prepared in school units by secondary school teachers through the imprinting of the opinion for the Health Education programs, of all those involved in their preparation process (students, teachers, health education managers).
Material – Methods: The present study is a mixed methods qualitative study with more than one data source (triangulation). The study recorded the number and the subjects - per school year - of the Health Education programs that ran during the time frame of the thesis. Teachers (N=215) and Health Education managers (N=3) participated by filling in an anonymous questionnaire appropriately constructed according to the category to which it was addressed. Data collection from teachers was completed with interviews (N=13) which were conducted with a structured guide adapted to the needs of the research. Students who had participated in Health Education programs also took part (N=50). The students formed focus groups (Focus Groups) and an appropriate guide was distributed during the conduct of the groups, while the researcher simultaneously recorded useful information that emerged during the process. Data analysis was performed with IBM SPSS 25.0 (Statistical Package for Social Sciences). Categorical variables are presented as absolute and relative frequencies, while quantitative variables are presented as mean, standard deviation, median, minimum value, and maximum value. A t-test and Spearman's correlation coefficient were conducted to investigate bivariate relationships between independent and dependent variables. When more than two independent variables were found to be statistically significant in bivariate analysis, multiple linear regression was applied. The two-sided level of statistical significance was set equal to 0.05.
Results: Regarding the demographic data of the teachers, 126 were women (58.6%), mostly over 45 years old (46.5% were between 45 and 54), married (69.3%), and permanently appointed in public education (92.1%). 43.3% of the participants had a university degree, and a large percentage of them had progressed to second (33%) and third (10.7%) cycle postgraduate studies. The majority of teachers who participated had more than 13 years of experience in education, with the largest percentage having more than twenty years (40%), without any training in Health Education (83.7%), and without experience in implementing programs (81, 4%), but were willing to participate (50.7%) in some program. Multivariate linear regression with the score on the factor "teachers' time and skills" as the dependent variable showed that teachers who had studied health education were more likely to think that teachers have time to conduct health education programs effectively and skills to facilitate participation in the school community in health education programs and activities. Multivariate linear regression with the score on the factor "active role of teachers" as the dependent variable showed that teachers who had received training in health education were more likely to think that teachers can play an active role in health education programs. The multivariate linear regression with the score on the factor "effectiveness of health education programs" as the dependent variable showed that teachers who declared themselves willing to implement health education programs considered to a greater extent that health education programs are effective and in addition teachers with more years of service considered to a greater extent that health education programs are effective. In the interviews conducted, motivations and obstacles to program implementation were discussed, and information was collected on how to choose a topic as well as the factors that push the implementation of a program. From the students' focus groups, the majority of participants were female students (60%) and 3rd-grade students (58%). Participants almost all felt that they acquired new skills to a great or very great extent (98%) and felt that the content of the programs was very to very much related to real life (98%).
Conclusions: Teachers who had studied health education were more likely to believe that teachers have the time to carry out health education programs effectively and the skills to facilitate the participation of the school community in health education programs and activities. Teachers who had received training in health education were more likely to believe that teachers could play an active role in health education programs. The teachers with more years of service considered to a greater extent that the health education programs are effective. The teachers who declared themselves willing to implement health education programs considered to a greater extent that the health education programs are effective. The students found the programs useful and gained new knowledge and skills that are likely to be used in the future, yet do not feel that they wasted their time attending a Health Education program.
