The Greeks of the Emperors: Greek personnel in the imperial administration during the Julio-Claudian dynasty
Summary:
This doctoral thesis examines the impact of Greek-origin individuals in the imperial administration during the reign of the Julio-Claudian dynasty (27 BC – 68 AD). The study focuses on their influence on imperial policy, the development of administrative institutions, and the emergence of a Greek administrative group that depended on the emperor. The prosopographical research compiled information on over three hundred individuals who were of Greek origin or identified through their Greek cognomen, and who were officeholders in the imperial administration or had personal relationships with the emperors. The analysis revealed that these individuals played a significant role in shaping the early imperial administrative institutions and creating a Greek 'administrative aristocracy' in Rome and the provinces. They also formed interest groups to serve their collective interests, maintained connections with the Greek world, and utilized their specialized skills and knowledge. Overall, the Greeks within the Julio-Claudian administration made substantial contributions to the administration of the Early Roman Empire and were related to several Greek senators and equites of the first two post-Christian centuries.
