The implementation of Artificial Intelligence in mental health: The ethical dimensions of using AI Systems in counselling support lines.
Summary:
In recent years, Artificial Intelligence is gradually established in the field of mental health, providing powerful tools that create new possibilities for the prevention, the diagnosis and the treatment of mental disorders. As a result, its entry into the field of counselling support in particular, is increasingly dynamic, through therapeutic chatbots that, by being already used by thousands of users around the world, are radically transform the experience of the counselling process.
In the present thesis, we will discuss the ethical concerns raised by this radical change, focusing specifically on the potential use of the therapeutic chatbots in helplines and counselling support lines, which until now are staffed by human professionals. In particular, we will consider the ethical challenges that this possibility creates, both because of its effect on the quality of services provided, and because of the redefinition it can bring about to the vital concepts of the therapeutic interaction and relationship. Ιn parallel, we will study whether the use of Α.Ι. systems in mental health is compatible with the principles of Ethics, by proceeding to the overview of the phenomenon through the four principles of bioethics and two of the main streams of moral philosophy, namely Utilitarianism and Deontology.
