Summary:
The aim of this study is to examine and analyze the key factors influencing football performance in top
teams with purpose the best understanding of the reasons that are part of the teams’ success. Specifically,
68 matches were studied, where 34 of them were about the teams BAYERN/DORTMUND and the other
34 matches the teams SHALKE/HERTHA. The factors that were analyzed were: the goals, attempts on
target, ball possession, passes, accuracy of passes and technical elements of the game, including aerial
duels, tackles, and fouls. Description statistic was used [average level, typical deviation, min, max,
frequency (f and %f) and comparison of the separate factors with analysis variance (ANOVA)]. Importance
level was settled to sig<0,05.
Data analysis revealed significant differences between teams with higher efficiency, such as BAYERN and
DORTMUND, compared to SCHALKE/HERTHA in specific parameters. The BAYERN/DORTMUND
pair statistically scored more goals (2,41±1,9 vs 1±0,90) and had more total shots (17,38±6,8 vs 11,62±4,7)
compared to SCHALKE/HERTHA. The top two teams had higher overall ball possession (62,368±9,1%
vs. 43,518±9,1%, p < 0,001), had more total passes (576,79±101,8) with better passing accuracy
(453,03±85,30) vs (341,97±67, p < 0,001 and 279,47±56,80, p < 0,001). The top pair won more aerial duels
(12,74±5,3 vs 17,85, p < 0,001), more attempts on goal overall (17,38±6,8 vs 11,47±4,8, p < 0,001).
In conclusion, based on the above statistical data, there are significant differences in the performance of
football teams concerning the examined parameters. More specifically, the lead teams performed better in
most of the examined parameters which shows their superiority over the rest of the teams in the league,
which led these teams to win the first positions of the championship.
