PHYSICS AND METAPHYSICS IN NEWTON'S SPACE AND THE INTERPREΤΙVE APPROACHES OF R.DiSALLE AND A.JANIAK
Summary:
The theory of time, space and motion which presented by Newton in his Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica in 1687, constituted a major turning point in the history of science. A variety of reactions caused by the theory's break with the previous tradition of natural philosophy and by the originality of Newton's ideas. Natural philosophers on Newton’s time were unwilling to fully accept his ideas and raised their objections, creating a tradition of criticism that lasted well into the mid-20th century. However, during the decades of the 1960’s and 1970’s new interpretive approaches were presented; which pushed the Newtonian theory of space in a new direction. Among the scholars influenced by this new direction were Robert DiSalle and Andrew Janiak, who partly embraced and adapted this direction to their own research interests, providing thus further urging to the Newtonian studies.
