The menstrual stigma and the management of menstrual hygiene. Perceptions, practices and policies in different regions of the world with varying levels of development
Summary:
INTRODUCTION: Menstruation is a natural process and an indicator of physical and mental health. However, it is stigmatized in various ways across different regions of the world. Stigma, coupled with inadequate sanitary infrastructure, lack of accessibility to menstrual hygiene products, and insufficient information about the phenomenon, has multiple consequences on women's lives, affecting both their physical and mental health, as well as their education.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this work is to highlight the perceptions that make menstruation a taboo, along with the consequences of these perceptions. It seeks to emphasize the existence and effectiveness of menstrual hygiene management programs and menstrual activism initiatives.
METHODS: A literature review was conducted using the PUBMED database, following the PRISMA method.
CONCLUSION: An approach for improved menstrual hygiene management should be holistic, including addressing menstrual stigma, providing menstrual hygiene products and facilities, proper waste disposal containers, clean water and soap, education in schools about menstruation, involving boys in this education, having female teachers, and ensuring access to pain relief medication.
