Lipid profile of children and adolescents with diabetes and its association with atherosclerosis risk factors
Summary:
Patients with type 1 diabetes(T1D) and poor glycaemic control have increased risk
to develop cardiovascular disease compared to healthy controls and well-controlled
peers with T1D. Consequently mortality is increased due to the macrovascular
diabetes complications. Lipid profile of children and adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes
Mellitus does not differ from that of healthy peers, however the oxidation of LDL
Cholesterol due to hyperglycemia in Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is an additional
atherogenes is risk factor. Lipid regulation with healthy life style including diet and
regular exercise is the cornerstone in T1D managementin order to achieve
euglycemia, in order to prevent micro and macro vascular diabetes complications and
improve the quality of life and increase survival. According to literature, endothelial
damage in young people with T1D appears earlier than in the general pediatric
population. Prior diagnosis of endothelial dysfunction and medical interventions will
be beneficial for young people with T1D since at a young age the development of
endothelial dysfunctions and microvascular complications can be easily prevented.
