The Rhetoric of Legal Texts in Papyri from Augustan Age to Late Antiquity
Summary:
The present doctoral dissertation examines the rhetoric of legal documents drafted from the Augustan era to late antiquity. Taking into consideration the legal utility of structural parts, clauses, and formulaic expressions within legal documents, this study presents the contribution of structure and language to the rhetorical composition of their content. Particularly, the analysis of the structural components highlights the rhetorical purpose of their combination and arrangement, both of which are rooted in an ancient strategy of persuasion. On a linguistic level, the examination of rhetorical elements in legal documents, primarily from the Byzantine period, provides insight into the psychological state, not only of the notaries, but also of the contracting parties concerning the outcome of their legal transactions. The feeling of uncertainty that prevails in the legal transactions of individuals is addressed through rhetoric.
