The effects of four rescue protocols of a drowning victim within on the physiological parameters of the lifeguard.
Summary:
The total time of a rescue of a drowning victim (detection recognition and carry), is the definitive factor of survival with no serious or irreversible damage. The lesser the time of the rescue, the more the chances of survival with full recovery. The rescue equipment used plays a significant role in a timely rescue. The aim of our study was to detect the speed of the approach and the degree of the physical burden on the lifeguard, between two different approach techniques with different rescue equipment (rescue can and rescue board) at a medium (75m) and long (150m) distance of position of the victim, from the lifeguard tower. In conducting our research, we used a sample of 20 trained and bona fide male lifeguards. Measured: the times of the rescues thet were evaluated after each rescue, the concentration of lactic acid in blood and the subjective perceived quality of CPR, if it was necessary. The analysis of the results revealed a significant statistical decreased of the average rescue time when a rescue board was used against the use of the rescue can (~31 seconds) in both rescue distances. Regarding the lactic acid concentration in blood there was a significant statistical difference of the average concentration between the medium distance rescue, 11,65mmol/L with rescue can against 8,42mmol/L with rescue board and the long distance rescue, 13mmol/L with rescue can against 10,47 with the rescue board. Similar were the findings of the perceived quality of CPR. Significant statistical difference was discovered on the average of time between the short distance, 8,6 with rescue can against 7 with rescue board and the long distance 8,6 with rescue can against 6,2 with rescue board. Our research discovered that the use of the rescue board offers a significant advantage in comparison to a mixed run-swim with a rescue can rescue, in mild sea conditions at a medium and long distance from the lifeguard tower, rescue.
