The votive reliefs of Peloponnese. Iconography, interpretation and meaning in the study of cult from the Archaic towards the Roman period
Summary:
This doctoral thesis collects and critically presents a considerable number of stone slabs, decorated in relief, which were found in various regions of the Peloponnese, from the Archaic up to the Roman periods. Through the stylistic, typological and iconographic analysis, as well as the interpretation of the reliefs, an attempt is made to clarify and understand the inextricably linked religious context as it was formed through the centuries. Specifically, the dissertation gathers as many reliefs as possible, presented either in excavation reports, or in the context of more general treatises on the worship of gods and heroes or finally in articles in festschrifts and journals. At the same time, after permission from ephorates of antiquities, an on-site autopsy was carried out in the archaeological sites and the museums' storerooms for the study of unpublished material, which was correlated with the already known reliefs, offering a reassessment on the interpretation of their iconography as it emerges both from the mythical narrative and the political and religious aspects of each period. After the first (introductory) chapter, the pursuit of the reliefs is carried out in each geographical area, starting from the north with Corinth, Argolis, Achaia and Arcadia and ending with the two broad southern territories of Messenia and Laconia. For each region brief introductions are made about its historical and archaeological development, on the iconography of deities and heroes and then the examination focuses on the reliefs, for which an attempt is made to integrate them into a wider religious context, complementing the written sources or being the only indication when these are absent. The concluding chapter focuses on certain issues, such as those of local workshops and on those cases when in certain cities and periods the reliefs were not enough in number or were altogether missing.
