INVESTIGATING THE VIEWS AND EXPERIENCES OF FOSTER MOTHERS ON FOSTERING A CHILD WITH A DISABILITY
Summary:
This study explores the motivations of foster mothers to engage in fostering, investigating the role of disability in this decision. Simultaneously, it examines the challenges encountered in the fostering process, studies issues related to daily living, identifies future challenges and examines their satisfaction. A qualitative methodological approach was employed and data collection was conducted through semi-structured interviews. The study’s sample consists of eight (8) foster mothers who have provided care for disabled child.
The study’s results indicated that the foster mothers' motivations for fostering were related to the child's disability, the emotional relationships developed with the disabled child and their sense of charity. The majority of the sample perceived the foster child’s disability as a limitation in fulfilling basic personal and social needs. The research highlighted several challenges faced by foster mothers in the fostering process, including delays in the approval process and difficulties in collaboration with institutional staff. Day-to-day challenges for foster mothers encompass multiple roles, impacts on social and personal relationships, challenging behavior from the foster child, interactions within the school context and navigating the healthcare system. A primary concern expressed for the future is what will happen to foster children without their support. Most foster mothers expressed satisfaction with the existing foster care system. Finally, a theme that spontaneously emerged from participants' responses was their experiences regarding the neglect and abuse that disabled children suffer in institutions.
