The quality of life of patients with chronic pain before and after their visit to a pain clinic
Summary:
Introduction: Neuropathic pain is caused by damage or disease of the somatosensory nervous system peripherally or centrally. Neuropathic pain is persistent and becomes chronic due to the development of maladaptive pathological mechanisms. Often, it coexists with other comorbidities and interacts with aggravating and predisposing factors. It creates a vicious cycle and reduces the quality of life of patients.
Purpose: To investigate the effect of therapeutic treatments on the quality of life of
patients with chronic neuropathic pain. The treatments will be given to the patients by doctors of the pain clinic of the Aretae Hospital. Their effectiveness will be assessed by studying patients’ quality of life before their visit to the pain clinic and after taking medication for one month. A comparison between the two measurements will follow.
Material and method: The sample of the study consisted of 99 patients with chronic
neuropathic pain who came to the pain clinic of Aretae Hospital for the first time,
met the conditions for their participation and gave their consent. They completed the EQ-5D-3L questionnaire before the therapeutic intervention as well as one month after. Data analysis was performed using the statistical program IBMSPSSStatisticsv.27.
Results: Of the 121 patients with chronic neuropathic pain, 99 patients progressed to the second phase. The remaining 22 were excluded for various reasons. A significant improvement was observed in all parameters studied between their first and second recording. Quality of life related to mobility, self-care, performance of usual activities, pain and discomfort, anxiety and sadness as well as assessment of the generalized condition the health of patients.
Conclusions: Based on the findings of the study, significant statistical differences were observed between the first and second recording of the quality of life of patients with chronic neuropathic pain. The improvement of the quality of life indicates the reduction of pain, the increase of their functionality and independence one month after receiving the medication from the pain and palliative care clinic of the Aretae Hospital.
