''Navigating the cretan folk culture. An educational program for primary school"
Summary:
This thesis deals with issues of the popular culture of Crete and it recommends a selection of projects designed for primary school which focus on knowledge, customs and practices that are part of the intangible cultural heritage of the island combining Folklore Studies with educational theory and practice. These projects are targeted on understanding the value and importance of protecting the tangible and intangible cultural tradition of Crete and, in general, the local culture of different regions of Greece. The topics that will be analyzed are the wild edible grasses of Crete, the mantinades and the Steiak (steiakos) jumping dance. The history of their creation and survival up to this day is presented, with the eventual transformations they have undergone. At the same time, primary school children will be encouraged to get to know the history of the island and their family in order to connect with it, to integrate it into a wider historical, social, economic and global context and to keep it alive by enjoying its benefits in their daily lives.
Τhe activities were originally developed with the intention for the Cretan students to get to know the local culture. Clearly, any group of primary school students that wishes to approach these subjects can take on these projects. The activities cover a wide range of educational objectives, such as cognitive, emotional, psychomotor, and also more specific objectives, depending on the topic and the activities.
