The differences between Greece and Turkey the role of the European Union
Summary:
The aim of this essay is to investigate the differences between Greece and Turkey and the role of the European Union. Particularly a historical review is made beginning from the year 1923, the year when the treaty of Lausanne was signed until today. In 1967 the only bilateral difference was the continental shelf demacration. Turkey's illegal invasion and occupation of Cyprus in 1974 marked a new era forthe billateral relations between the two countries. Turkey began το threaten the sovereign rights of Greece. The turkish diplomacy has presented claims such as << the grey zones of the Aegean sea>>. From this point of view the essay investigates the billateral relations between Turkey and the European Union, as well as the integration of Turkey into the Union. The European Council of Helsinki (1999) is recognised as one of the biggest achievments in the Greek diplomacy, if not the greatest. The intergation of Cyprus in the European Community without the resolution of the Cypriot issue was a huge succes for Cyprus and Greece. Also the European Union gained the role to modernise and bring democracy to Turkey. Today the integration of Turkey into the Union seems unrealistic. The billateral relations between Greece and Turkey are almost hostile, since no billateral difference has been resolved so far. Greece can promote a new deal a << New Elsinki>> taking advantage the role of a member state in the Union. Turkey's relations with the Union are facing difficulties, but there are prospects such as the cooperation of Turkey in PESCO and a new deal for the Customs Union.
