Survival rate of patient presenting to the emergency department from partial drowning
Summary:
Introduction: Drowning is a major public health issue with an annual incidence of 500,000 victims and 360,000 deaths worldwide. It is one of the leading causes of accidental death in children and adolescents.
Aim: The aim of the present study was to investigate the survival rate of patients who come to the emergency department from near drowning.
Material and Method: The collection of data was carried out from the records of patients who attended the Emergency Department of a public hospital in Athens. The records concerned patients who were brought to the ED after near-drowning incidents. The collection of data concerned a period of five years and more specifically the period from 2018 to 2022. All patients were delivered to the TEP through the ED.
Results: In the present study 2.6% of patients were minors and 80% of patients were 65 to 93 years of age. Mortality from drowning was slightly higher for men than for women without this difference being statistically significant. The mean age of the patients who died was older than those who did not die with this difference being statistically significant.
Conclusions: Deaths due to drowning are a significant problem especially in countries with high levels of tourism such as Greece. An important prevention parameter to reduce deaths due to drowning is the training of individuals for the appropriate swimming conditions, as well as for the required knowledge regarding the provision of first aid.
