Summary:
The aim of this study is the investigation of the communication skills of unemployed people. More specifically, the source of initiation and implementation was the author's internship in the Municipality of Peristeri and the monitoring and implementation of sessions with unemployed people residing in the Municipality with the aim of finding a job. During the internship and the contact with unemployed residents, difficulties in expressing and communicating with potential employers, both written and verbal, were observed. Communication is considered essential for interaction and social integration, and for the quality of human life. Communication and interpersonal skills [e.g. expressiveness, empathy, sensitivity, conflict resolution, intercultural communication (ΕΟΠΠΕΠ, 2021˙ Brewer, 2013)] are important life skills and play a catalytic role in entering and remaining in the labour market. Soft skills (e.g. communication skills) are critical for many jobs and desirable by employers. Based on this and the value of communication skills in the workplace, a survey was conducted with a sample of 120 individuals to investigate their communication skills and their correlation with unemployment, demographic characteristics and participation in a career guidance session. The results of the study showed no correlation between gender, marital status, age and number of children with the communication skills of the unemployed. However, important indicators for the development of communication skills were found to be educational level and duration of unemployment.
