Career decision-making profile and hope: " The case of Gymnasium (3rd grade) and High School (1st grade) students in Leonteios School of Athens"
Summary:
The purpose of the research was to investigate the connection between the factor of hope and the process of making career decisions in a sample of teenage students of the 3rd grade Gymnasium and 1st grade High School of the Leonteion School of Athens. More specifically, the Hope Centered Career Inventory (HCCI, Niles S.G., Yoon H.J. & Amundson N.E., 2011/ Translation-Adaptation in Greek: D. Sidiropoulou-Dimakakou, K. Tsehelidou) while the decision-making process in 2 ways: (a) dichotomous answer questions in relation to whether the student has chosen an orientation group and post-secondary studies and (b) the Career Decision-Making Profile Questionnaire (CDMP) by Gati, Landman, Davitovitch, Asulin-Peretz, & Gadassi, 2010 / Translation and adaptation into Greek by Sidiropoulou-Dimakakou & Argyropoulou).
The work is structured through the presentation of the psychosocial power of hope, important theories of career decision-making as well as the presentation of important changes experienced by individuals during the adolescent period. It concludes with the presentation of the results through an evaluation and analysis of the research findings.
The analysis of the research results bring to the fore interesting conclusions and occasions for further discussion.
43.6% of the students had already decided on the studies they will do after High School, a fact that signals the importance of inclusion and utilization of career guidance and career counselling from the first years of High School. But the importance of counselling and career guidance is additionally indicated for the 56.4% who had not decided. We conclude that career counselling can be an extremely useful service throughout the middle and high school years for students. Both for those who tend to decide quickly and for the rest.
57.7% of students were helped by career guidance to make decisions and 57.1% gathered information on their own before deciding on the profession they would like to pursue. Career counselling can benefit individuals to make better decisions by helping them understand themselves, learn how to gather information, and interpret parental and peer influences and dependencies.
73.7% of students are not influenced by the profession of their parents to decide what profession they will follow. After all, they are in their teenage years and want/seek for independence!
83.3% of the students had envisioned themselves doing some profession and 82.7% stated that they felt hopeful about their professional future. This reinforces the need to nurture and develop visionary adolescence in order to empower hope for individuals.
In conclusion, the findings provide a more penetrating look at the real needs of young people in relation to career counselling and career guidance services, illuminate important aspects of career decision-making characteristics, and reinforce the value of Hope as a psychosocial force and catalyst in career and life planning.
