Bibliographic review of contamination of soil environments in urban centers
Summary:
Urban lands are an integral part of human daily life. Chronic modern anthropogenic activity has affected its properties and use by separating them from natural soils (Rate, 2022). In addition to its properties, its geochemical composition has also changed as it has been enriched by a multitude of substances and toxic metals. These substances are organic pollutants and most of them are included in persistent organic pollutants (POP). More specifically, these substances are aromatic hydrocarbons (polycyclic or monocyclic), chlorinated organic compounds and flame retardants. Substances that do not occur in urban or natural soils where their presence indicates anthropogenic contamination (Li et al., 2018). In addition to organic pollutants, contamination is also indicated by the presence of potentially toxic metals in high concentrations. These metals fall under the category of heavy metals (lead, chromium, nickel, zinc and copper among others) (Ajmone-Marsan & Biasioli, 2010) . When soil contamination reaches high enough levels it is harmful to humans and soil ecosystems. This is why it is necessary to restore it and bring it back to permissible limits. The specific restoration can be achieved in several ways, such ways are thermal remediation, phytoremediation and bioremediation (Rodríguez-Eugenio et al., 2018)
