Symptoms of depression, anxiety and drug use in refugees and immigrants

Introduction: Refugees (refugeeism) and immigration are phenomena of global concern. Refugees go through a series of traumatic experiences, which directly affect their mental health. The risk of comorbidity of depression and anxiety symptoms with substance dependence is an issue that cannot be overlooked as it can have negative consequences on people’s lives.
Purpose: The purpose of this work was to detect symptoms of substance use in a refugee, immigrant population. At the same time, an attempt was made to investigate the relationship between the use of substances and the demographic characteristics of each individual in relation to possible symptoms of depression and anxiety.
Methodology: 96 refugees or immigrants who visited the non-governmental organizations, where the research was conducted, participated in this research. (60 of them was men and 36 women, their age mean was 32,1 years- SD=10,2-). To detect symptoms of depression, the CES-D scale questionnaire was used, for anxiety symptoms the GAD-7, for substance use the DUDIT and finally they completed a demographic data questionnaire. The research instruments were translated into English, French, Farsi and Ukrainian.
