The construction of the apollonian profile: From the Homeric Hymn to Callimachus and Nonnus
Summary:
The present study aims to present the qualities, symbols and spheres of influence that constitute the profile of the god Apollo in the homonymous Homeric Hymn (HH 3), the Hymn of Callimachus (Call. Hymn 2), and selected passages from Nonnus' mythological epic Dionysiaca (Nonn. Dion. 1 and 27). The purpose is to demonstrate the continuity that governs the apollonian profile as a multidimensional endeavor "in motion," from its formation to its establishment through specific and consistent thematic and linguistic choices of the poets. Through the hymns, the reciprocal relationship between god and mortals will also be highlighted, with human experience being shaped by the apollonian nature. This deepening into the aspects of worship and the nature of the god paves the way for examining the apollonian profile in Nonnus' Dionysiaca, where the god Apollo is portrayed not only as the antithesis of the god Dionysus but also as his ally and complement.
